A sombre mood has engulfed the community of Ndooni Primary School in Kitui County after a teacher was murdered and her body set on fire.
The badly burned body of Daisy Mbaluka was discovered on Tuesday.
Kitui County Director of Education Salesa Adano confirmed the brutal killing of the teacher and called on the security team to investigate the matter and apprehend the culprits.
“This is a sad criminal incident that calls for a thorough probe,” Salesa said.
Unconfirmed reports indicated that the teacher was waylaid by a gang of people while heading home from school on Monday evening and slashed to death. They then torched her body.
Kitui East Subcounty Police Commander Consaga Malasi on Wednesday said that police were still investigating the matter.
The shocking killing comes only a day after parents closed down the school and chased away the headteacher for allegedly running down the institution.
Kitui KNUT Secretary-General Simon Nding’o who was accompanied by Eastern region KNUT Chairman Samuel Kathinuku described the killing as a blow to the teaching fraternity in the county and urged police to speed up investigations.
“This is a crime that cannot go unpunished. We call on the police to do a thorough investigation and bring the criminals to book,” Nding’o said.
