Firms agree on pipes repair after water crisis

A contractor in Naivasha accused of destroying pipes owned by a local water firm has agreed to repair them.

Naivasha Water, Sewerage and Sanitation Company had gone to court to compel the contractor to repair the pipes damaged during road construction.

The damaged pipes had led to a water shortage in Naivasha town and nearby estates.

The water company Chief Executive Officer Nahashon Wahome said his firm decided to reach an out of court agreement with the contractor after he promised to pay.

“We have decided to resolve the matter outside the court,” Mr Wahome said. He also revealed that the first installment has already been paid and repair work has started.

“We, however, will be updating the court on the progress we are making in ensuring the pipes are fully repaired and residents are getting water,” Wahome said.

Residents of Site, Kabati and County Council estates were the most affected by the shortage.

They had gone for almost two months without water.

Agnes Njambi, a resident, said she had been spending at least Sh200 daily to buy water from vendors. “We are waiting eagerly to see if the water company and the contractor will keep their promise. We are also keenly watching the bills,” Ms Njambi said.

She noted that it would be wrong for the water firm to serve residents with bills, yet they had not received water for almost two months.
