Church demolished as worship centres fight over land

mbroiled in a land dispute at Ngata on the outskirts of Nakuru town.

One Accord Christian Centres and St Gertrude’s Catholic Church are fighting for the ownership of a one-acre piece of land, where the two churches are located.

Yesterday, members of One Accord Christian Centres woke up to news of their church being demolished by St Gertrude's Catholic Church.

Faithful of the Catholic church closed the main gate and blocked believers of the rival church from accessing the compound, accusing them of encroaching on the land.

With one accord, the other church members jumped over the perimeter wall and forced the casual labourers to stop the demolition.

One Accord Pastor Mark Kiroso said he received a phone call from Ngata assistant chief Charles Koech, who informed him of the demolition. The administrator however did not produce an eviction order.

“It is wrong for the church to demolish our altar without a notice. We cannot allow this,” said Kiroso.

Mr Koech supervised the demolition and said he was complying to a court order, which he did not produce.

“The area OCS is here. The church should be demolished because it was built illegally,” he said.
