Duale warns teachers against banning Muslim students over Hijab

GARISSA, KENYA: Leader of Majority Aden Duale has cautioned head teachers against banning Muslim students from wearing hijabs in schools.

Speaking during the weekend at his Garissa Township Constituency, Duale said tough action would be taken against school heads doing so since they are violating student’s constitutional rights.

The Garissa Township lawmaker said all religious faiths and their beliefs including what they wear have been recognized by the constitution.

He was reacting to last month’s allegations that seven students from Thaara Secondary School in Muranga County were sent home after they were found with hijabs covered in their heads.

Duale said as leaders from Muslim Community they will not allow that to happen as it amounts to religious discrimination.

“I want to forewarn head teachers that they should not dare ban our children from schools because of wearing a hijab, tough action will be taken against any teacher banning children because of hijab,” he said.
