Police have rescued nine minors suspected to be victims of child trafficking in Soweto slums, Nairobi.
In their statement issued on Tuesday morning, the detectives said that the children aged 12 to 17 years were confined in rooms and may have been subjected to harsh living conditions.
It also confirmed that three suspects, including an 80-year old woman, were arrested in the process.
Statement by the detectives posted on the DCI twitter handle reads: “Nine children aged between 12 years & 17 years, suspected to be victims of Human Trafficking, were yesterday rescued by DCI detectives from a house in Soweto slums. Three suspects; 41-yr-old Said Hamisi, 52-yr-old Maimuna Bakari and 80-yr-old Sophia Wanjiru arrested. Children safe.”
The detectives said that they rescued the children after launching investigations into the disappearance of a 17-year-old student, where they were led to Soweto residence where children were confined in rooms.
“The arrests followed the disappearance of a 17-year-old student from Soweto, whose search led detectives to the house where they found the children packed in a room. Investigators believe that the children were waiting to be Trafficked. Suspects in lawful custody,” read the statement in part.
