A night guard convicted for murder nearly seven years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.

Joseph Kibet Kirui, 62, was sentenced by High Court Judge Janet Mulwa for the murder of his wife Jane Chepkemoi on June 21, 2012 in Nyahururu town.

In her judgement Justice Mulwa described the offence as serious saying it was committed in the presence of Mr Kibet's two children aged 12 and 14 years.

“The children will forever be traumatised. They are yet to come to terms with the loss of their mother seven years (later)," said the judge.

Justice Mulwa cited a social inquiry report that stated that the accused's actions were deliberate and caused pain to the children who find it difficult to forgive him.

The couple had been married for 29 years and had 11 children.
