Slain university student Ivy Wangechi.

10 days after the gruesome murder of Moi University student Ivy Wangechi by an axe-wielding man, grief-stricken family will today bury her remains at their rural home in Mahiga, Nyeri County.

About 2000 guests are expected to attend the funeral service in Mahiga.

A night vigil in honour of Wangechi was held on Wednesday night in Nyeri Town as activists and youth called out violence against women.

The 6th year medical student was hacked to death in broad daylight outside the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) by one Naftali Kinuthia who claims that he and Wangechi were in a relationship before being rejected.

It is alleged that he went to the university armed with an axe and knife in a sack and waited for her at the gate before committing the act.

The 28-year-old man has since been arraigned at an Eldoret court

The court however directed that the suspect be detained for 14 days to give the prosecution time to conclude investigations. The court also ordered that Kinuthia be allowed to seek medical attention at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital during the period he is in custody.

He sustained serious injuries after an irate mob attacked him after he attacked and killed the student.

Wangechi 25, was hacked to death by Kinuthia on April 9 as she walked outside Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.

She died on the spot after sustaining deep cuts on the neck and head.

University student leaders have raised concerns over students’ security after the chilling murder.
