Man detained for skipping probation

The High Court has revoked a three-year probation sentence handed a farmer convicted for manslaughter in 2017.

Justice Janet Mulwa observed that Peter Gachuri, 35, violated the probation terms after he failed to appear for a routine check at a probation office in Nakuru.

“The accused to be detained at the Nakuru GK Prison as he awaits court ruling,” ruled the judge. Gachuri was convicted for killing his 22-year-old cousin Samson Wahome at Mirangine location, Nyandarua County.

He was handed the sentence after a probation report presented in court was in his favour.

Rhoda Kahugi, a probation officer, told court that Gachuri had failed numerous times to comply with provisions of the order.

Kahugi informed the court that her attempted to reach Gachuri was in vain, forcing the court to issue a warrant of arrest against him last year.

Gachuri was apprehended on Thursday last week after a year of search and taken to Nakuru Central Police Station.

He was sentenced to three years under probation after he was found guilty of killing a neighbour whom he had hit with a jembe on his head at their farm.

The man succumbed to his injuries at Nakuru level 5 Hospital where he was admitted.

The two families are said to have been having an unsettled land dispute which has lasted for years.

The ruling is on May 6.
