Politicians from North Eastern have been told to stop misleading the public on the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS), launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta, last week.

Speaking in Habaswein in Wajir yesterday, Regional Commissioner Mohamed Birik said claims that the exercise will isolate the region are far-fetched and don’t have basis.

“We have noted with concern regular utterances made by politicians on the ongoing Niims registration, its unfortunate because we don’t expect such from them, they should instead support the Government,” said Mr Birik.

Raised concerns

The registration of Niims commenced last week after the High Court gave the green light, but ordered the Government not to link the exercise with service delivery.

Political leaders in the region including Garissa Governor Ali Korane and his Mandera Counterpart Ali Roba had raised concerns on the exercise.

Garissa Governor said they are concerned since 90 percent of people living in the region don’t have proper documentation such as ID cards, birth and other certificates needed in for registration.
