Mombasa MCAs impeached Transport and Infrastructure Executive Taufiq Balala.

A majority of MCAs backed the impeachment motion by Jomvu Kuu MCA Athman Shebe claiming Mr Balala was incompetent and had failed to account for more than Sh3 billion allocated to his docket for development projects in the past three years.

The motion claimed the executive failed to ensure proper street lighting and revenue collection.

“We have sent out a warning shot that the county assembly is no longer being used by the executive as a rubber stamp. It is instead a rubber-stand and we are ready to strike at any incompetent public officer,” Mr Shebe said.

The motion was seconded by Bofu MCA Ahmed Salama. Residents who jammed the public gallery went into a frenzy following the impeachment, claiming that the county government had not implemented development projects.

Mtopanga MCA Lucy Chizi opposed the motion on grounds that Balala was not given adequate time to defend himself. Nominated MCA Mohamed Hatimy - a close ally of governor Hassan Joho - skipped the sitting.
