Fatuma Dullo overcame many challenges to become the first woman to be elected senator in the conservative pastoral county.

After her husband died in a road crash in 2001, Mrs Dullo raised three children while working as an administrator in Lamu County.

The Garba Tula High School alumnus beat six other candidates to clinch the seat. She garnered 15,026 votes through the Party for Development and Reforms.

Her rivals were Hussein Roba (independent), who got 14,139 votes and Jubilee Party’s Mohammed Liban with 12,139 votes. The county has 75,388 registered voters.
