Scores of motorists spent their Sunday night along Mombasa Road in Athi River stretch over an unprecedented traffic jam.
The jam was blamed on trailers that were overlapping on both lanes hence causing a major traffic jam from Maanzoni towards Nairobi and from Mlolongo.
More traffic personnel were deployed to the area Monday morning to help in addressing the situation.
The problem started on Sunday at about 6 pm when a trailer developed a mechanical problem near Athi River.
Traffic commandant Jecinta Kinyua said this forced some of the mototists to start overlapping to beat the jam that was building.
“Some of them were stuck in the mud following rains in the process blocking the way. We had to go there to even wake up some drivers who had slept in their vehicles,” she said.
The vehicles started to flow at about 7 am on Monday when the affected ones were removed.
“The vehicles are now moving well but there was a backlog,” she said.
Affected motorists took to social media to call for police help to arrive their destinations. The area is notorious with such traffic mess with the truck drivers being blamed for the situation.
