Human rights activist Ken Wafula

Human rights activist Ken Wafula was on Saturday attacked at a political rally in Kitale.

Mr Wafula was confronted by an MP's supporters during a meeting addressed by Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang'ula, prompting him to flee through a fence.

"He was relieving himself at the pit latrine within the Ford Kenya offices where the meeting was going on when three men grabbed and beat him up, accusing him of being disrespectful to the MP," a witness said.

Wafula then managed to slip from the attackers and escaped through the fence, even as two men on the other side of the fence continued attacking him using crude weapons.

Two women selling vegetables from an adjacent kiosk screamed, raising the alarm. The attackers sped off using a vehicle said to belong to the MP. Wafula is in hospital.
