All you need to know about the little known defender Manchester United signed on transfer deadline day

Anthony Martial may have taken the headlines - but there was another teenager who completed a deadline day switch to Old Trafford in the summer winow.

Defender Regan Poole, 17, joined from Newport County for a fee that could rise up to £400,000.

Relative pocket change for Manchester United, but a price tag which would make a huge difference at the League Two club.

But who is he? And what will he bring to Old Trafford?

Regan Poole is a Welsh central defender, who has made 16 senior appearances for Newport County.

He was born in 1997. Feel old yet?

Poole came through the youth ranks at Cardiff City, before joining Newport as a scholar in 2014.

He had a trial with United later that year, before breaking into the first team at Newport, making his debut aged 16 years and 94 days in a 0-0 draw against Shrewsbury, becoming the youngest player in the club's history.

While still very young, Poole is a talented centre-half, exemplified by the fact United decided to take him to Old Trafford in the summer window.

Newport coach Mike Flynn is backing him to be a success, saying: "He's very good on the ball. He's got a great spring on him, he's fit, he's strong.

"He's got most of the attributes and I think he can go on and become a top player."

It is unlikely Poole will feature this season, given his tender years and the number of central defenders above him in the pecking order.

However, United wouldn't have signed him if they didn't see him graduating into the starting XI over the next few years.

As for this term, he will likely be used in the academy squad, and possibly being available for UEFA Youth League football.
