Scotland: A lesbian couple are due to give birth weeks apart after getting pregnant by the same man.
Stephanie and Randa Armstrong had considered IVF on the NHS but decided they wanted their children to be genetically related.
Instead they found a donor online and then used the Internet to compile a DIY artificial insemination kit.
Stephanie, 25, is now 29 weeks pregnant with a boy while Randa, 31, had her 12-week scan this month confirming she is also expecting.
The couple, who married at a civil ceremony in 2013, want their children to call them ‘mummy Steph’ and ‘mummy Randa’ and plan to have both their names on the birth certificates.
They found the donor, a 24-year-old science student on Edinburgh, on the website the Known Donor Registry.
Stephanie told The Sun: “He agreed he would help us because he is young and not in a relationship. “We wanted the children to be blood-related. I’m having a boy so we are hoping Randa will have a girl. A lot of people have said it’s kind of like having twins.
Randa added: “He had a brain, was fit enough, had the same colour of hair as Stephanie and was willing to help.”
The father has agreed to have no contact with the children and in return they will not ask for any financial support from him.
Randa, a lingerie model from Libya, met Stephanie online in 2009 and their pair now live together in Galashiels, Scotland.
The donor visited their home in October and they had an "awkward" cuppa before he "did his thing".
The women then used YouTube videos and the £20 kit of syringes and ovulation tests.
Stephanie became pregnant at the second attempt in January having failed to conceive after the first time the donor visited their home.
Randa conceived three times but miscarried in the early stages of pregnancy each time, until she learned in April she had finally concieved.
The pair are glad of the gap between babies as they can now attend each other's antenatal classes.
