Nairobi, Kenya: Nairobi’s Strathmore School buttressed their position as the kings of mathematics in the Form Four examinations when they came out on top for the third straight year.

In the results of the 2013 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, released yesterday, Strathmore School also emerged as the best school in English.

The school’s principal, John Muthiora, a mathematics teacher, was elated with his school’s position as the country’s kings of mathematics, and now English.

“The competition has been very stiff. But we are still happy about this school’s performance. We have topped mathematics for three years now and we take that as an achievement,” said Muthiora.

The school had a performance index of 13.768 in mathematics while in English it had a performance index of 14.621.

Muthiora attributed the top performances in the two subjects to hard work among teachers and students.

“There has been a culture of mathematics excellence here and the students have developed positive attitude towards the subject. The teachers have also worked closely with the students to communicate good English and bring fun and logic in both subjects,” he said.

Strathmore School is a private school and it came second after Moi High School Kabarak in the private schools category. Strathmore had a mean score of 77.06 and it was ranked position seven in the country.

When The Standard visited the school, the students were having their daily mass in the school’s chapel.

The principal led the students out of the mass and went straight to teach them Mathematics in class.

“I don’t know why we have dropped to position seven because we have not received the results yet. When we do and we go through how the students have performed, then we can know for sure what contributed to the drop,” said Muthiora.
