Kenyan schools adopt nation’s first Digital Essay Competition

Nairobi, Kenya: Results for Kenya’s first ever Digital Essay Competition have been released with four students getting awarded for outstanding performance.

The competition was organised by ekitabu, an ebooks provider and was conducted in cooperation with Kenya’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

The organisation invited over 2,000 public and private schools across Kenya to submit essays online at essay.ekitabu.com as part of its mission to advance the use of digital content to achieve transformative educational outcomes.

The competition was open in August and September to Upper Primary (Class 5 - Class 8) pupils and all Secondary School students.

The competition involved participants writing on the topic “How Will Technology Improve My Learning". A total of 718 essays (381 from primary schools and from 337 from Secondary Schools) were received from all over the country

Gloria Shani Kabare of The Kenya High School emerged the winner followed by Cherop Maisy Chuma of St. Joseph’s Girls High School. Komora Tenny Kanana of Malindi High School was thirtd overall.

The judges’ award went to Esther Hope Wahu of Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls High School in Nyeri who, along with her essay, submitted a hand drawn picture showing her analog life today and her digital future as she conceives it.

Sponsors were the Ministry of Education, Intel, Samsung, Text Book Centre and Elimu. Prizes included scholarship funds for the top three Finalists in each category and a grand prize of Samsung Tablets for the top essays in each category.
