Council treasurer kicked out of office for ‘misuse’ of funds

Workers at Migori Municipal Council have kicked out the treasurer over alleged mismanagement of Sh16 million.

Mr Japheth Orwa was thrown out of his office and the Town Clerk Erastus Karani ordered by the workers to give an account of how the cash was used, if he was to remain at the council.

However, both Karani and Orwa denied the claims and blamed “certain forces” of plotting to render them jobless for failing to meet their demands.

Orwa said he was ready for investigation to clear his name.

Speaking yesterday, the workers union chairman George Owino said they had decided to take the action after failing to get satisfactory answers on how the money was used.

“We want the chief officers to explain to us how the money was used. We are also asking the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the matter,” he said.

Mr Owino, who was accompanied by Mrs Alice Osumba (secretary), further said the council has not been conducting their business in an open manner. Osumba said revenue collected since last year was being spent haphazardly.
