Stick to issues in draft, EU urges politicians

BY LUCIANNE LIMO

European Union has asked politicians to stop misleading Kenyans on the Proposed Constitution. EU head of delegation to Kenya Eric Van Linden noted that some politicians were spreading lies regarding the proposed laws.

Without citing specific clauses that have been distorted or naming the politicians, Van Linden stressed the need to strengthen civic education.

Linden defended the EU and diplomats from accusations that they were meddling in Kenyan affairs.

Van Linden was speaking in Nairobi Thursday after announcing that Belgium will take the EU presidency for the next six months.

Linden, who has been vocal in urging Kenyans to register and vote, expressed optimism that the deadlock between The Treasury and Interim Independent Electoral Commission over the referendum funding will be resolved.

Linden said the EU grants Kenya Sh10 billion annually for development projects.

He pointed out that the EU channels its money for civic education through the civil society.
