President Zuma is better than men who keep concubines

South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma’s marriage to his fifth wife in a colourful Zulu traditional ceremony on Monday has attracted both praise and condemnation in equal measure.

But as much as many condemn him for what they consider ‘immoral’ practice, Zuma deserves credit for his boldness and honesty to officially marry up to five wives instead of keeping concubines. It is always easy to pretend to be monogamous.

Can Zuma critics compare him with Tiger Woods, who allegedly kept almost 20 other relations for years while married?

Besides, most African cultures allow polygamy.

It is wrong to judge Zuma, an African, according to Western standards. We are Africans and one is allowed to have many wives as long he can cater for their needs and they are properly married under customary law.

James Kiamba, Nairobi.

I cannot understand why people should demonise Zuma for marrying many women when his other wives are not complaining.

George Mugambi, Meru.

Zuma solemnised his marriage to the mother of his three children, nothing wrong with that.

Joanne Mlawe, South Africa.

At the age of 68, it is shameful for a person of Zuma’s stature to still want to marry or worse still appear in public half-naked. He is setting a bad precedent for many young South Africans. It should have some limits even if it is his culture.

Chester K, South Africa.
