L'or Mbongo is one of the biggest gospel names in Africa and her singing prowess is likened to Rebecca Malope's. L'or was in Kenya recently and spoke to CAROL NYANGA
Who is L’or Mbongo?
I am a born-again Christian who uses her singing talent to minister the word of God. I have been instrumental in uplifting the image of Congolese gospel music across the globe.

Not enough funding for DR Congo climate change fight, report
Music has always been a big part of me ever since I was a child. While in primary school, I used to sing in Setoma Catholic Church Choir.
While a student at Kinshasa Lisen Chen Schools, I was also an active member in the choir. I later joined Germaine School Campus De Kinshasa where my talent blossomed.
You recently performed in Kenya, for the first time. How was the experience?
It was overwhelming. I was surprised at how my Kenyan fans received me with love despite the language barrier. I discovered Kenyans love Lingala. It was a humbling experience.
Other than Kenya, where else have you performed?
I have ministered in the United States of America, Israel, France, Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Italy, Gabon and many countries in Asia and Africa.
What project brought you to Kenya?
The World Kenyans for Kenya project. This is a charity even that was aimed at raising funds for hungry Kenyans in Turkana. It was organised by Congolese promoter Jules Nsana of Nsana Promotions and Pefa Church among others.
The organisers requested me to grace the event because they felt I was the ideal person due to my popularity across the continent.
The event also featured Tanzanian’s Christina Shusho, Apostle Cindy from the US, MOG, Emmy Kosgei and Solomon Mukubwa.
How come despite your popularity your music is not distributed in Kenya?
You are right and it concerns me that my Kenyans fans have to visit YouTube to access my music.
I think the promoters are to blame for this.
Nevertheless, I am looking into the matter to ensure that my music is available in music shops in Kenya.
Your powerful vocals have been compared to South Africa’s gospel queen Rebecca Malope. How do you feel?
It’s indeed an honour to be compared to such a big name. Malope is actually my role model.
What makes your music so powerful?
Mine is a unique Congo gospel sound with a touch of traditional Zulu, Lingala and Rumba. I think this is what appeals to an international audience.
My songs are uplifting especially to those who feel let down by the world and think God has forgotten them.
Through my songs I encourage the hopeless that nothing is impossible with God and that His timing is perfect.
What inspires you?
Bible teachings. All my songs are laced with words from the Bible. It is such an awesome life-changing book.
How is it like working together with your husband?
It is a great opportunity. We love working together because apart from being best friends we share the same faith.
How would you compare the Kenyan and Congolese gospel music scene?
Although the Congolese gospel music scene is way ahead of the Kenya’s, the latter has come of age with young talent emerging every day.
Did you ever dream of becoming a popular gospel musician?
Honestly no. I never imagined that I would be this big and it would move this fast.
I am humbled by what God is doing in my life because I know so many musicians who started way before me and are still struggling.
What were the challenges you faced at the beginning?
Getting enough funds to record my first album was not easy. Only a few people were willing to help me. Others mocked me.
But through God’s grace I got the funds and managed to record my first album. I also faced setbacks with the computers I was using to record. Nevertheless, I was determined to overcome.
Who is L’or Mbongo away from the music?
I am a social, down-to-earth and God-fearing woman who loves to spend time ministering and encouraging the downtrodden in society.
I also love to spend time with my children and husband and reading the Bible.
What are your achievements?
I have won several awards for Best Congolese Gospel Artiste in Congo. I have also toured the world where my music has been well received and has changed lives.
What are your future plans?
I am planning to launch my latest 14-track album, Sakuza soon. Besides that I have six albums, which include Yesu Kaka, Singolo, Ezala tina, Fimbulu, among others.
