East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has broken silence on Felix Oringa alias
DJ Evolve’s rising medical bills that sparked outrage last week among social
media users.
Kenyans on
social media and friends to DJ Evolve demanded to if the legislator is helping
in paying the medical bills after reports that the bill rose to almost Sh7million.
Through his
lawyer Duncan Okatch, Babu Owino, who is accused of shooting DJ Evolve on the
neck at B Club in Nairobi, stated that the legislator has so far paid Sh5m for
the hospital bills.
“Our client
has up to date paid a total of Sh5 million which principally is channeled
towards the treatment of the victim,” read part of the letter by Okatch and
Partners Advocates, the firm representing Babu Owino.
In addition, the letter reads that Mr Owino has no control over the money he was asked to pay by the court since the cash was directly paid to the Honourable Courts.

“The court
order indicated that these monies were to be paid directly to the Honourable
Courts, which would then release the funds, on a monthly basis, to Nairobi
Hospital where the victim is hospitalized.”
“This
essentially means that our client has no control of the funds once he has
deposited the same in court. It is instructive to note that our client
voluntarily, and without coercion or court orders, paid an initial sum of
Ksh.600,000 and has openly undertaken to cater fully for the medical expenses
of the victim until the victim fully recovers,” stated the letter.
According to
the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Babu Owino was arrested on
Friday, January 17, 2020, for allegedly shooting the 25-year-old DJ.
The
Embasaki East MP was arraigned in court, and in his ruling, Milimani Chief
Magistrate Francis Andayi directed Babu Owino to deposit Sh10 million cash bail
in four equal installments of Sh2.5 million each in the next three months.
The
Magistrate said that some of the money would be used to settle DJ Evolve’s
medical bills.
