How abortion led to death of activist Caroline Mwatha — DCI

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on Tuesday evening released a statement regarding the death of activist Caroline Mwatha.

According to a statement seen by Ureport and signed by DCI boss George Kinoti, the deceased was in constant communication with one Alexander Gitau Gikonya prior to her demise.

Further, intent to procure an abortion of a five-month-old pregnancy was established and it is alleged that an unidentified doctor had demanded Sh7000 to conduct the procedure.

The fee was later reduced to Sh6000 and was sent to Mwatha by Alexander.

On February 6, 2019, she went to a clinic called New Njiru Community Centre in Dandora Phase 1 and it is believed that the abortion procedure was done by the owner, Betty Akinyi and one Michael Onchiri alias Dr Mike.

“Investigators believe that Caroline died in the clinic and the body was transferred to the Nairobi City Mortuary on 7th February 2019 at 4.42 am.

“This is confirmed by records at the City Mortuary although the deceased’s name was captured as Carol Mbeki under tag No.1495,” read the statement in part.

According to the DCI, records at the mortuary indicate that the body was brought by a motor vehicle KBP 677B.

Six arrests have already been made in connection with Mwatha’s death and those being investigated include:

1. Betty Akinyi Nyanya

2. Richard Ramoya Abudo

3. Geaorgia Achieng Tabitha

4. Michael Onchiri alias Dr Mike

5. Alexander Gitau Gikonya (boyfriend)

6. Stephen Maina (Uber driver)

The DCI also assured the family that all those involved in Mwatha’s death will be brought to book.
