New York Times apologises for posting photos of dead people at 14 Riverside

The New York Times has apologised for publishing insensitive photos of the 14 Riverside Drive attack that happened on Tuesday afternoon in Nairobi.

Social media users slammed the media outlet after publishing images of dead people, giving run down of the events at the scene of crime.

A senior journalist with the outlet, Kimiko de Freytas-Tamura, was forced to issue the apology on Twitter.

“I apologize on behalf of @nytimes and @nytphoto for causing anger and anguish over the photos that have been published with our reporting. Thank you,” Kimiko de Freytas-Tamura tweeted.

Inspector General of Police (IG) Joseph Boinnet said that terrorists began the attack by setting ablaze three vehicles at the I&M bank parking lot before moving to the dusitD2 complex.

Boinnet said the attackers carried out a suicide explosion at the entrance of dusitD2 hotel, injuring several people among them guests.

“This criminal activity commenced at about 3 o’clock in a coordinated fashion that began with an attack at I&M bank with an explosion that targeted three vehicles on the parking lot and suicide explosion in the foyer at Dusit hotel where a number of guests suffered severe injuries,” said Boinnet.

He further stated the multi-agency special security team had made progress to regain control of the scene of crime.
