With the advent of slay queens, marriage is no longer a pressing issue in the mind of the Kenyan young man at the moment.
Unlike in the past when most men married before 30, in this digital era, men have chosen to stay unmarried even beyond 35.
There are reasons why young men would run away so fast to save their lives if the word ‘marriage’ is whispered within earshot.
Waruhi, 31, is one of the men who find marriage unattractive.
According to Waruhi, one of the reasons why young men refuse to marry is that they fear that losing the freedom to enjoy sex with women of their choice.

“When you marry you are forced to stick to one partner. I fear I may lose sexual freedom. For now, I would not try to [marry]”, Waruhi reveals.
Another reason why men would rather stay single is that marriage curtails their space and liberty. It has been revealed that some men are party animals.
They spend long hours washing their throats with drinks and sharing nyama choma with their best friends.
These men would not like anyone to mention marriage to them.
They fear marriage would make them lose their independence, and as a result, good things in life such as clubbing and bites of nyama choma over bottles of beer.
“I love drinking with my friends every day. If I marry now, I will lose all the good things in life. For now, marriage is not for me,” Thomas, a thirty-seven-year-old mechanic, shares.
Also, the idea of spending a long life with one partner scares the hell out of the Kenyan young men. They think that they would be bored to death if they live with one partner forever – they feel that life would be a sad journey.
“I shudder to just imagine about living with one partner forever. That is the greatest punishment imaginable”, Waruhi, who is an accountant, fears.
But what in most cases keeps young men from walking down the celebrated isle is the dread of added responsibility. The fact that these men would have to take care of another human being, and even kids, does not seem attractive to them in any way.
“I am scared of taking care of a woman. What if she turns out to be a slay queen only after my few coins. Let me wait a little longer”, Thomas decides.
To this end, men fear dragging their feet into a marriage that would make them lose part of their wealth that they have toiled for in case of an early divorce.
“In case of a divorce, the law seems to favour women. I don’t want to lose my money to women”, Thomas concludes.
Therefore, it seems that with the rise of slay queens in Kenya, the young men would not settle down any time soon.
