The mother and father of the KCB Thika Bank robbers have revealed interesting information about their two sons’ Charles Mwangi Murakura, 30, and Halford Munene Murakura, 32.

The mother of the two said that they were brought up in Karura village, Mathira Constituency, and are both graduates. The eldest son, Munene is an electrical and electronics engineering graduate while the second one, Mwangi, has a degree in agricultural engineering.

. According to school records, Mwangi scored the highest marks in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) class of 2002 at Karura Primary School with 409 marks out of a possible 500, a record the school is yet to break. Menene, the brother also performed well in his examinations and were both admitted to Nyeri High School.

The mother said that the two were passionate and read anything they could find in the house.

“They came home and studied together; they read anything they could find in the house and kept each other's company,” said the mother, Esther Nyaguthii.

“People often asked me if they were twins because they did everything together, including walking to and from school," she continued.

Before high school, the mother said that Mwangi was worried about the school fees since they did not have the money. The mother however, sold their only cow and got help from friends and neighbours to pay the fees.

"When Mwangi was admitted to Nyeri High I was worried because I did not have the money. I decided to sell our only cow and then borrow from neighbors and friends,” she said.

However, the mother still recalls how difficult it was for her sons when they were sent home for fees since they had to walk a very long distance.

“It was a struggle, walking for close to six hours, but my boys were very intelligent and I knew I had to give them the best education possible,” the mother continued.

Their father, Titus Githui, said he was not surprised by his sons' actions since government officials steal and get away with it.

“How do you tell your children not to do these things when senior government officials engage in blatant theft and get away with it?” said the father.
