One passenger died on the spot Thursday morning as 13 others were wounded following an accident in which a matatu they were riding in rolled into a ditch near Kahawa Barracks, Githurai along Superhighway, Nairobi.
Six of them had serious injuries, police and witnesses said. The matatu was ferrying passengers towards Thika Town when the driver lost its control.
Those injured were evacuated and rushed to hospitals in the area and police say they had multiple injuries. The driver of the matatu is among those injured. Police were called to the scene after the 6.30 am incident.
Nairobi head of traffic Edward Mwamburi said they suspect the vehicle was moving at high speed and its speed governor had been tampered with.
“We are investigating to know how it rolled in such a place,” said Mwamburi.
