TSC asked to give credits to teachers with special course

Kenya: The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has demanded that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) honours its pledge to give incremental credits to all teachers who have successfully completed a course in educational management that was offered by the Kenya Education Management Institute (Kemi).

In a letter addressed to the commission’s chairperson Salome Gichura, the union’s Secretary General Wilson Sossion said the teachers’ employer had committed itself in writing to promote teachers by giving them incremental credit on completion of the course.

“TSC, in a letter to the Director KEMI {Ref No TSC/D(S)/2012}, dated February 29, last year, commited incremental credits to all successful granduands upon completion of their courses. This is commitment enough by the employer and as to whether the increments should be effected is, therefore, not negotiable,” read the letter in part.

Mr Sossion said several teachers invested their resources and time in the course, in the hope that it would earn them the increments. In a Press release on March 16, 2012, Kemi informed teachers that TSC had officially declared that incremental credits would be given to all teachers who successfully complete the diploma course.

Kemi’s one-year Diploma in Education Management programme was launched in 2011 and targeted 19,833 primary school heads and 6,009 secondary school principals.
