As the Airtel Rising Star Challenge begins in Kisumu today, hundreds of supporters will throng Kisumu Boys and Kisumu Day schools as well as Kisumu Stadium to watch the national ball games.

Having worked as an assistant coach for Tusker and after helping his team emerge the regional champions on several occasions, Barding coach George Owoko will be stepping up to a challenge he is familiar with. The Barding High School coach has promised to lift the title and retain the trophy in the lakeside city games.

“We are very ready for the nationals. We know it’s a great challenge but we will take a game at a time. Our aim is to ensure that we retain the trophy,” said Mr Owoko.

Barding principal Victor Makanda praised the work done by coach Owoko so far and believes he will guide the team in lifting the title.

“I have faith in Owoko. He is a great coach and an inspiration to the team. I’m sure that he will make the Lake Region happy,” said Mr Makanda.

Right from district level, Barding were determined to qualify for the nationals and went on to beat all and sundry without conceding a goal.

However, the going seemed tough at county level as Usenge gave them a run for their money with a 2-0 lead inside 28 minutes. Barding’s attempts at a come-back never materialised even as the crowd got charged up.

Crowd trouble almost saw Barding thrown out of the championship as Usenge were declared the winners but both sides advanced to the Regional finals in Kisumu.

Barding would turn the tables on Usenge in the regional finals, winning 3-1 to advance to today’s national finals.

Whether they continue with their exploits is a matter of debate but they will be assured of home support.
