President William Ruto has said he will not bow to pressure to have a power-sharing agreement with Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking in Isiolo and Meru counties where he launched several projects and issued title deeds to residents of Isiolo, President Ruto said he would not allow the international community to pressure the government into a handshake with Raila.

"We cannot continue to allow people to undermine our democracy where Kenyans vote and then a small group uses violent protests to get into power. The Constitution is clear, leaders come to power through elections," he said.

He added that it had become the norm that despite Kenyans electing their preferred leaders, the opposition threatened to cause chaos unless they were included in government.

"We are going to be firm, clear, and cannot install leadership and do what our friends want us to do. Kenyans are going to be led by leaders elected by the people, not by fierce protests," he said.

Ruto lauded the police for quelling the protests planned by Azimio leaders.

"The police have done a good job in dealing with the protests, a very commendable and professional effort to ensure they protect life and property in this country," he said.

The President said Kenyans had kept off the protests because they did not want the country to slip into anarchy.

At Ruiri in Meru, Ruto told off Raila for sponsoring the demonstrations. "We beat him but he has refused to accept. I am going to be firm against him," he said.

The president said his administration had ensured Wednesday demonstrations were contained "and will continue to do so". He pledged to start a water project in the area, saying he would instruct Water Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome to follow up.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said Azimio leaders were in hiding and afraid to lead the demonstration.

"These leaders call for protests and fail to show up. We find them in the comfort of their houses while youth take to the streets. We shall not allow that kind of impunity," Mr Gachagua said.

The DP said Ruto was firm and would not accommodate Raila in his government. "These people were used to getting into government through political blackmail. They used blackmail for many years. Our government will stop the trend of politics decisively."

At Ngaremara, Ruto issued 1,000 title deeds and pledged to issue another 30,000 deeds for all adjudication areas in the next two to three years.

He said 100 officials had been employed to expedite adjudication in the country.

The president also opened the 24km Isiolo-Ruiri-Meru road, saying it will boost trade between Meru and Isiolo.
