The fate of impeached Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol lies in the hands of an 11-member committee, formed to investigate allegations that the county assembly levelled against him.
Senators on Thursday voted to set up the said committee that could save or propose to have the beleaguered deputy governor removed from office.
The committee members are Senators William Kisang (Elgeyo Marakwet), Abass Mohammed (Wajir), Mwenda Gataya Mo Fire (Tharaka Nithi), Okong'o Omogeni (Nyamira), Dan Maanzo (Makueni), Richard Onyonka (Kisii) and Nominated senators Betty Batuli Montet, Catherine Mumma, Tabitha Mutinda, Raphael Chimera and Miraj Abdullahi.
The committee has 10 days to investigate the charges against Oduol, which include gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, gross misconduct and misleading the public by giving false information about alleged corruption in the county government.
"The committee should table its report on or before Friday, June 23, 2023," Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said, urging objectivity from the committee members.
Oduol and the Siaya county assembly will have a chance to make their case before the committee, which could either acquit or convict the deputy governor.
If the 11-member committee acquits him, then the matter will rest at that. If they recommend Oduol's removal, the decision will have to be ratified by a vote of senators in plenary.
