The Kenya African National Union (KANU) Party has expelled its Secretary-General Nick Salat.

The party's National Executive Council (NEC) said on Friday, February 10 that it had established that Salat breached the KANU Constitution and engaged in gross misconduct.

The decision was made after the party's NEC met in Mombasa County.

KANU Chairperson Gideon Moi was allowed by the top decision-making organ to pick Salat's replacement in an acting capacity.

"Consequently, NEC mandated the National Chairman Gideon Moi to propose for deliberations and adoption, suitable individuals to fill the vacant national positions, including that of the Secretary-General on an interim basis," KANU's Director of Communications Joseph Towett said in a statement.

Salat, who was suspended from his position as KANU Secretary-General on December 15, 2022, failed to appear before the Internal Dispute Resolution Committee.

"The NEC mandated the National Elections Board to immediately develop mechanism for conducting nationwide grassroots elections before the end of the year in a bid to revamp the party's grassroots structures and enhance national support," said KANU.
