Kenyatta gazetted Thursday, September 8, as the first sitting for two Houses when members would be sworn in.

Twenty candidates have already collected nomination papers for the positions of Senate Speaker and deputy speaker respectively.

About 22 candidates have collected nomination papers in the National Assembly.

Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye on Wednesday, September 7, noted all arrangements have been made for the elections.

Under the Senate Standing Orders, the candidates are required to get two senators who support their bid for consideration.

"We shall inform the nation later in the day of how many candidates have returned their nomination papers and out of those, how many we find to be validly nominated for the position of Speaker and Deputy speaker respectively," Nyegenye noted.

To be elected Speaker, one must marshal two-thirds or 233 of the 349 members of the National Assembly votes and 45 of the 67 Senators to be elected Speaker. If none achieves the threshold, the one who receives a simple majority in the second-round wins.

On Wednesday, September 7, the Senators were taken through orientation ahead of the swearing-in at Parliament buildings in Nairobi.

The senators will also be briefed on how to carry out their duties as well as be taken through the privileges they enjoy as members of the Senate.
