Politicians pay tribute to Kiambu son Kariuki

President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday led leaders in paying tribute to politician and businessman Lawrence Nginyo Kariuki (pictured) who died in hospital.

Mr Kariuki passed away on Monday at the Aga Khan University Hospital.

In his message of condolence, President Kenyatta described Kariuki as an astute businessman and serial entrepreneur whose businesses created thousands of jobs for young Kenyans.

"Kenya has lost a great patriot and a business icon who believed in the Kenyan market. As an entrepreneur, Mr Kariuki's businesses created thousands of jobs for our youth," the President said.

Uhuru also remembered Kariuki as an outstanding businessman who supported institutions and, through his business exploit initiatives, uplifted the country’s social and economic wellbeing.

The Head of State prayed to God to give Kariuki's family "the fortitude to bear the loss" and assured them of his support "at this difficult period of mourning".

Kariuki's son, Antony, said: "My dad had been receiving treatment in the UK for two weeks. He was re-admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital where he underwent a successful surgery. But his health later deteriorated and has been in the ICU until his passing on early Monday morning."

Kenyan patriot

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi said he was saddened by Kariuki's death.

"Kariuki was a committed Kenyan patriot, bold multiparty crusader and an astute businessman who was among the first crop of post-independent Africa's real estate and urban investors who inspired many."

The senator said Kariuki created a circle of friends cutting across the political divide.

"He will be remembered for his forthrightness in social engagements and razor-sharp investment mind. He leaves behind enduring imprints in the business and political landscape."

ODM leader Raila Odinga also condoled with the family of the businessman.

Mr Odinga described Kariuki as "a great man who made contributions to the country’s struggle for democracy."

"May the Lord comfort the family at this trying moment," said Raila.

Ford-Kenya party leader Moses Wetang'ula said Kariuki would be remembered "for his courageous and relentless struggle for the restoration of multiparty democracy and constitutional reforms."

Kariuki will be remembered for his selflessness and efforts to unite all communities by hosting different leaders at his Tigoni home.
