A clergyman has disappeared after allegedly defiling and killing a 10-year-old girl in Homa Bay County.

The man reportedly defiled the girl at Kamuombo village in Kamenya sub-location, Rangwe, on Thursday, November 3.

The minor's relatives say she had been sent to return a bucket they had borrowed from a neighbour, where she found the suspect.

The clergyman is said to have followed the girl out, assaulted and strangled her in a maize plantation. A passerby raised the alarm and the girl was taken to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital, but died while undergoing treatment.

Assistant Chief Lilian Ombai said the clergyman was on a mission to pray for families.

The sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigations officer Monica Berege said they had arrested the woman who accommodated the man.

"She can only identify the suspect by one name. But what was she doing with that man in her house if she doesn't know him? We are doing our best to arrest the main suspect," Berege said.
