Wajir Municipality, in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society, has completed a massive town cleanup to prepare for the El Nino rains. The exercise was done by municipal staff, Red Cross volunteers, and public officers. Open drainages were unclogged, and litter was collected to ensure a clean municipality.
Red Cross Wajir Coordinator Abdia Manya said that as part of El Nino preparedness, the Kenya Red Cross has already prepositioned nonfood and WASH items to Wajir to benefit 1450 households. The Kenya Red Cross has also trained Red Cross action teams, including divers and volunteers, to prepare for El Nino.
The county government of Wajir, in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, has conducted community mobilization through public address, awareness, and radio messaging.
Wajir Municipality MD Mr Abdinoor has stated that the department will ensure the whole town is clean and all drainage is unclogged ahead of the anticipated El Nino rains.
At the same time, the WHO and the Ministry of Health are conducting a series of integrated surveillance training in four priority Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL) counties ahead of the projected El Nino rains. The four counties, Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera, are expected to face an upsurge of water and vector-borne diseases during the rainy season.
