President-elect William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua will be sworn in on Tuesday, September 13, which will be a public holiday.
The inauguration ceremony will take place at Kasarani stadium, Nairobi, between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm, the Assumption of Office Committee chairperson Joseph Kinyua announced.
In a media briefing at the steps of Harambee House, Nairobi on Tuesday, Kinyua said that the formal gazettement of the holiday will be done later this week and the ceremony held in fidelity to the Constitution.
"The swearing-in ceremony and inauguration of the new administration will be held in fidelity with Article 141 of the Constitution being the first Tuesday following yesterday's decision by the Supreme Court upholding the declaration of the IEBC," Kinyua said.
The president-elect shall take the oath of office as administered by the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary before the Chief Justice as per the law.
"The swearing-in and the inauguration ceremony is an opportunity for the nation to not only witness and usher in our nation's fifth administration but also to celebrate the strength and vibrancy of our constitutional and democratic processes which differentiates Kenya from so many other nations in Africa and beyond," said Kinyua.
Today's meeting at Harambee House was also attended by representatives of the president-elect including Davis Chirchir, Justin Muturi, Gladys Sholei, and UDA Secretary General Veronica Maina.
The Supreme Court upheld Ruto's election yesterday [Sept 5], throwing out a petition challenging his win.
According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Ruto won the August 9 presidential election after garnering 7.18 million votes (50.49 per cent) against Raila Odinga's 6.94 million (48.85 per cent) votes.
