A section of the Eastern Bypass in Nairobi at Kangundo Road Junction will be closed for two months starting Thursday, March 3, to May 3, 2022 to allow for expansion of the bypass.

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) said in a statement on Tuesday, March 1 that the ongoing dualling of the road has occasioned the two-month closure.

Embakasi-bound motorists have been advised to use the slip road below the Kangundo overpass.

Other road users will use diversions set up during the closure.

“We request the public to be patient as we work to improve road safety and enhance urban mobility,” KURA said in their statement.

The expansion of the 28-kilometre road began in November 2021 at a cost of Sh12.5 billion.

It aims to reduce regular traffic snarl-ups on the bypass that connects Mombasa Road and the Thika Superhighway.

The Eastern Bypass stretches through City Cabanas, Pipeline, Utawala and Ruiru estates.

The bypass is one of the Vision 2030 infrastructure projects, and was designed during the Grand Coalition Government between 2008 and 2013.

It was among 11 infrastructure projects that the Kenyan Government delegation showcased to global investors in Beijing, China in 2017.

At the time, the delegation was attending the Road Forum for International Co-operation.

Transport CS James Macharia said the project would create employment to hundreds of youth.
