Activities came to a standstill at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) on Wednesday morning, following a fire drill.

People who were in various offices in the 28-story building were asked to stay out of the building, as fire engines moved in to contain the purported fire.

"We are not allowing anybody in until the fire is contained," said a KICC security official.

Parliamentary committees which were in session were forced to adjourn their sittings as the safety of the building was ascertained.

Later, activities resumed normalcy when it was established that it was a fire drill being conducted.

There were around five fire engines and several ambulances at the scene with hundreds of onlookers.

"There is a fire drill happening at KICC. No meetings are taking place right now," said an official at the Parliamentary team who requested anonymity.

The drill took approximately one hour before the situation went back to normal.

"Confirmed, everything is back to normal," an officer on radio communication was heard saying.
