Two suspects have been arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) with fake currency.
The two, Samuel Maina and Boniface Mungai were arrested by detectives based at DCI-Kilimani in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
The DCI said fake money totaling hundreds of millions of shillings were discovered at a house in Makaazi apartments, in the upmarket Kilimani neighborhood.
The fake cash, including USD6.8 million, Eur490,000, and Sh6.4 million, was found neatly packed in notes in metal boxes.
Also recovered in the early morning raid were jerry cans with an unknown liquid, DeLaRue branded badges and a seal, all suspected to be used in printing of the fake currencies.
“Assorted documents, customs reflector jackets, United Nations and National Treasury stickers were also confiscated,” said the DCI.
DCI said the suspects have been placed in custody as crime scene detectives comb the apartment for more clues, in what appears to be a well-coordinated, fake currency syndicate.
According to the DCI, recovery of the fake currency followed a report filed by a concerned member of the public, through the Directorates toll number.
