A 40-year-old Congolese woman was at the weekend arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi while carrying ten rolls of bhang valued at Sh30,000.

The woman was headed for Dubai when she was stopped by police at the checking unit. This was after she was seen staggering and had difficulties in walking.

Police said they frisked her and realised she had stuffed 10 rolls of bhang into her private parts.

Bhang rolls

"Police noticed her movements and felt they were not normal. When she was placed under observation and searched, she emitted ten rolls of bhang. It shocked the officers there," said Airport CID boss Judy Ndeda.

She further said bhang trafficking to destinations like Dubai demonstrates the level of desperation that traffickers have reached in their efforts to make money.

"Officers have been strict and this shows traffickers are getting desperate."

The suspect will appear in court on Monday to face charges of being in possession of the drug as well as trafficking in bhang.

The arrest came in the wake of increased police vigilance at major entry and exit points for terrorists and drug traffickers.

Previous case

Late December, another Congolese man was arrested after he was found with cocaine valued at Sh8 million.

The man had arrived in Nairobi aboard an Ethiopian Airline that had originated from Kinshasa through Addis Ababa when he was intercepted at 3am.

Cases of drug trafficking through JKIA have been on the rise in the recent past with police making several arrests.
