Kenya: The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has delayed the adjustment of new tariffs following protests by port users.
The authority has clarified that contrary to some recent reports, the amended tariffs are not yet in force.
“Furthermore, no customer has been subjected to the proposed minor adjustments,” KPA said in a statement.
Public Relations Manager Bernard Osero said KPA management and the board were currently re-examining the minor amendments of the tariffs, which were earlier scheduled for implementation by March 15, this year.

He said the proposed tariff amendments were meant to make the Port of Mombasa more competitive and user friendly in light of the prevailing economic conditions.
“The tentative implementation date was postponed by the management to give room for stakeholders consultations,” Mr Osero explained.
Osero said a new implementation date for the proposed tariffs would be announced later.
Shippers and clearing and forwarding agents had raised concern over the new tariffs forcing KPA to postpone the implementation.
KPA proposes higher rates for small vehicles handled and huge penalties for port users who delay to collect cargo at the port. However, importers of heavy vehicles and equipment are to get reduced rates.
