I arrived in Nairobi for the first came in 1971. My friend gave me ride on a motorbike from Nakuru to the city. It remains a memorable trip to date!

My mission was to attend an interview at Kenya Power and Lighting Company but I never showed up. I used the opportunity to meet my friend from South Africa who was visiting Kenya.

I put up in Kawangware.

My stay in Nakuru before coming to the city was an eye opener and taught me how I should behave. I didn’t experience a big culture shock because Nakuru also had big buildings.

What I can say is that the Nairobi of our time was disciplined. We did not have matatu madness and residents took control of it.

In case one got lost in the streets, unlike today, you could be safely and enthusiastically directed to your destination

Uhuru Park was a good place to rest and relax. There was discipline in the streets; it was normal and beautiful life.

That is when Nairobi was the city in the sun.

I miss that Nairobi!
