The University of Nairobi has written to its over 8,000 staff, notifying them of salary delay for July.

In an internal memo dated August 3, 2023, the University's acting Vice Chancellor Julius Ogeng'o attributed the delay to what he terms as 'circumstances beyond their control'.

"We are writing this letter to extend our heartfelt apologies to our esteemed staff for the delay in payment of July 2023 salaries. This was due to circumstances beyond our control. As a caring organisation, we are working towards resolving this matter expeditiously so that your salaries are paid soon," the letter reads.

The staff population of the University of Nairobi stands at 2,220 academic staff with PhDs, 450 professors and 5,525 administrative and technical staff.

Ogeng'o stepped in for the VC Stephen Kiama who proceeded on leave for a period of six months on August 1, 2023.

In March, the University Academic Staff Union raised concern over delayed salaries in all public universities.

The Union's Secretary General Constance Wasonga said most universities have not paid their academic staff members their February salaries; he warned that the university staff would down their tools should the delay persist.
