The Scott Christian University has launched its campus at Eldama Ravine Bible Theology College in Baringo, becoming the only university in the area.
Baringo has yet to establish its own university as leaders have disagreed on the location, with Baringo Central and Baringo South both being proposed.
The launch on Sunday was officiated by Professor Morompi Ole-Ronkei, the Vice Chancellor of Scott Christian University College. The event was attended by Cabinet Secretary SMES Simon Chelugui, Principal Secretary John Tanui, Governor Benjamin Cheboi, and other local leaders.
Professor Ole-Ronkei said the institution is currently working on implementing a 50-year plan, which will be submitted to the council for future implementation of the university.
"We have decided to submit a 50-year plan to the council, outlining the future of the university. Our foundation lies in theology, and we aspire to become the leading theological institution worldwide," said the VC.
Ole-Ronkei said the institution is committed to upgrading the Information Technology courses by capitalising on technology and establishing more campuses across the country.
"We have signed an MOU with Kijabe Mission Hospital, which has generously donated 50 acres of land for the construction of a campus. Our intention is to offer medical programme courses on this campus," added Ole-Ronkei.
He encouraged fellowship members to support the university by taking ownership of it and contributing Sh10 each, as part of efforts to transform the institution and provide scholarships to students.
Prof. Ole-Ronkei said the institution currently sponsors students through scholarships, providing them with opportunities to earn a living.
He urged parents to bring their children to the institution, which is conveniently located near them and emphasized the importance of embracing education.
Simon Kuto, the Principal of Ravine Bible College, said the institution has had a vision to upgrade the college since 2012. Kuto said the institution will assist parents in reducing costs by eliminating the need for travel and accommodation expenses.
"We are highly competitive and offer affordable rates. We encourage secondary school heads to guide learners in choosing Scott University, and we invite the business community to partner with us in constructing more rental houses to accommodate our students," said Kuto.
He urged the local community to come together and donate 100 acres of land to support the construction of the institution. The principal said this venture would be highly beneficial, as it has the potential to generate income and requires strong political support for its sustainability.
He said within five years, the campus will expand and become a constituent of Scott University, enabling them to apply for a charter to establish themselves as a fully-fledged university.
The PS of ICT, John Tanui, encouraged the institution to expand its course offerings in the field of digital spaces, enabling learners to access global job opportunities.
Bishop Kotut expressed appreciation for Scott's efforts in establishing a university in the area and encouraged the local community to use it.
Former Inspector General David Kimaiyo, a board member, emphasised the significance of residents committing their resources to its development.
