A parent wept uncontrollably in front of her daughters when a school admitted them after they were rejected in many schools due to lack of fees.

Munga Tsuma, 52 had to be helped by a school board chairman to compose himself after his daughters - Maimuna Kwekwe (17) and Idaya Chizi (15) joined sports giants Kaya Tiwi School in Kwale County.

"The only option I was now left with was to marry off these girls as young as they are because I could not get money to take them to secondary school," said Mr Tsuma.

Kwekwe and Chizi scored 351 and 349 marks out of 500 marks respectively in last year's KCPE at Benyoka Primary School in Rabai, Kilifi County.

The father of seven daughters shed more tears after his daughters, clothed in tatters, were given full uniform and shopping by school principal, Robert Aran and Board of Management Chairman George Mokaya.

"I walked to both MCA and MP's offices asking for bursary but was told to wait until second term. I feel let down by leaders we voted for," he said.

Mr Aran said the school was touched by the story of the bright students.

"As a school we provide opportunities for students to become socially responsible lifelong learners through a safe, nurturing and challenging learning environment," he said.

Aran said the school provided all requirements needed for a student to be admitted at the institution and called on well-wishers to support the girls.

Mr Mokaya said the scholol's board would ensure the girls lack nothing to enable them concentrate on their studies.

"The most important thing is to see the girls in school learning and protect them from early marriage," said Mokaya.

The girls thanked the school for admitting them. "We shall give our best to emerge victorious after four years in the school," said Chizi and Kwekwe, who want to become doctors.
