Meru County will develop new tourism sites to attract more tourists.
Governor Kiraitu Murungi's administration targets four sites in the municipality, which is surrounded by the Imenti forest, which hosts elephants, waterfalls and other attractions.
County Trade, Tourism and Cooperative Development Executive Mugambi Maingi said Meru town has increasingly become a preferred destination for many seeking conference facilities due to the rising number of hotels. “We want to create a nature trail corridor from the famous King Muuru, or the King of Meru oaks, to the Nkunga Sacred lake,” he said.
The oak tree, said to be about 400 years old, is thought to be the biggest in Imenti forest. “We want to create a facility for visitors and residents to relax next to the lake, which has plenty of trout fish. We want to partner with an investor to have a picnic site here, where people can have meals and drinks,” he said.
Another recreational site will be next to Nchiru, which hosts an ‘elephant maternity’ and the Njuri Ncheke elders' shrine.
