Mbooni, Kenya: Former Mbooni MP Fredrick Mulinge Kalulu has passed on after an illness.

According to his daughter Ndunge Kalulu, Kalulu died at the Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday night where he had been admitted.

Kalulu served as Mbooni MP for three terms, rising to the position of an assistant minister in the Office of the President during former President Moi’s regime. The father of the departed media icon Nzau Kalulu ventured into politics in 1950s and served as a councillor in the former Masaku County Council, before trying his hand in parliamentary politics in 1974.

He made history when he rode on a horse to Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos town to present his papers for the Mbooni Parliamentary seat in 1974. The charismatic politician also made history by becoming the first parliamentary candidate in Ukambani to campaign using a plane, which was his campaign symbol.

Ukambani leaders led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka have sent their messages of condolence to the  family and relatives of the late Kalulu. Kalonzo eulogised the late Kalulu as a leader who fearless fought for the rights of Mbooni people during the pre-independence days.

Others who condoled with the family were Senator Johnson Muthama, MPs Kisoi Munyao, Regina Ndambuki, Rose Museo, Patrick Makau, Katemi Makenga, Daniel Maanzo, Victor Munyaka and Susan Musyoka among others.

Mr Kisoi described the late Kalulu as a leader who made great contribution to the struggle for freedom.

“The late Kalulu played a significant role in the country’s struggle for independence and did a lot for Mbooni constituency and the country during his time as Mbooni legislator,” said the youthful Mbooni MP.
