North Korean scientists have made a sports drink out of mushrooms to improve athletic performance, it has been revealed.

The secretive nation's state news agency has announced that among an array of new inventions the country has developed is a mushroom drink which is "very effective" for helping sportsmen and women to recover from exertion.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that scientists had "succeeded in finding the way to cultivate mushroom fungus and made a functional drink.

"This natural drink is very effective in enhancing [the] physical ability of sports persons and recovering from their fatigues."

Mushrooms appear to be a focus of particular interest for the bizarre regime of dictator Kim Jong-un.

It recently announced that the country had established a Central Mushroom Research Institute in the country's capital city, Pyongyang.

KCNA reported at the time that the facility was intended to turn North Korea into a "huge producer of mushroom[s]."

North Korea struggles to grow enough food to feed its 24 million people - with a famine in the 1990s believed to have killed hundreds of thousands through starvation.
