Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has mourned the passing of Director David Warui Mwangi, a dedicated public servant who played a crucial role in vocational education and sports development in Nakuru County.
In a statement shared on her social media platforms, Governor Kihika described Mwangi as an exemplary leader who served the County Government of Nakuru for 11 years with "unwavering commitment and excellence."
"Mwangi was instrumental in advancing vocational training in the county, spearheading the development of the Nakuru County Vocational Training Centers (VTC) Policy and operationalizing 19 VTCs. His efforts significantly increased enrollment from 1,700 to 6,250 learners, equipping thousands of young people with essential skills for their future," she said.
Beyond education, Mwangi also contributed significantly to sports development. Since 2017, he served as Chair of the Kenya Youth Intercounty Sports Association (KYISA), helping nurture talent and youth engagement in sports. He also held key leadership positions in the county, including Director of Sports, Director of Vocational Training, and acting Chief Officer for Public Service, Training, and Development (PSTD).
Governor Kihika extended her heartfelt condolences to Mwangi's family, colleagues, and friends, emphasizing that his "passion, leadership, and service will be dearly missed."
Governor Kihika has been notably absent from the public eye since late last year, with the Nakuru County Government stating that she is on maternity leave. However, her prolonged absence has raised concerns among Nakuru residents and Kenyans at large regarding the discharge of her duties.
Recently, a group of activists criticized her continued absence, arguing that it has plunged the county into a governance crisis. Led by Nakuru activist Evans Kimori, the group petitioned U.S. authorities, including former President Donald Trump, to deport the governor, alleging that she had overstayed in the United States.
"When Nakuru residents took to the streets demanding answers over the abduction of fisherman Brian Odhiambo, the Governor was absent and silent, giving the voters who elected her a cold shoulder," Kimori said.
"The people sought reassurance from their leaders, but no senior county official addressed them or showed concern for justice," he added.
